Are you drawn to the portrait? If you have ever wanted to try drawing a portrait, without the use of grids and tracing, but by traditional drawing methods then this is perfect for you.
Cindy MacDonald’s workshop will give you an introduction to the materials, methods and techniques that she uses to draw a simple, realistic portrait in charcoal from scratch, including:
- Explanation of the materials
- Drawing a tonal value scale in charcoal
- Introducing “The Andrew Loomis” method of drawing
- The concepts of values and edges, line and shading
- Measuring and proportions of the head, and facial features
The class will be fully tutored and guided, so even if you are new to charcoal, you will be able to draw a portrait with a good likeness with Cindy’s guidance. Some drawing experience is preferable.

About your Teacher
Cindy MacDonald
I have always loved to draw and paint and as a child I would draw my favourite animals: big cats, birds and pets and people and decades later I still love these subjects!! My favourite mediums to use are oil, charcoal and graphite. To be able to find the essence, that divine spark that is within every living soul and to reveal that through my art is my constant aim. I exhibit regularly in art shows and exhibitions and have won awards in various categories. I am also a founding member of The Toowoomba Studio Art Trail. As a tutor, I love inspiring others draw through the evocative medium of charcoal. My artistic style is a fusion of contemporary and traditional influences and my faith also continues to be a great source of inspiration to me.
