Alex Stalling is a multidisciplinary artist based in Toowoomba, Queensland, whose practice explores the relationship between personal identity, lived experience and the ways we make sense of the world around us.
Working across painting, drawing and collage, Stalling combines intuitive image-making, animal motifs and layered visual narratives to investigate how identity is formed, expressed and continually reshaped. Her process moves between deliberate observation and intuitive experimentation, allowing unexpected associations, recurring symbols and material discoveries to inform the development of her work.
Drawing on the visual languages of both art and the natural world, Stalling is interested in how images can hold multiple meanings, communicate complex experiences and reveal connections between the personal and the collective. Through an evolving, multidisciplinary practice, she explores the potential of making as a way of thinking, questioning and understanding.
Alongside her studio practice, Stalling has built an extensive career across arts leadership, cultural development and creative education, with experience working within regional and community-based arts contexts. Her work spans gallery direction, public art, community activation, arts business development and education, reflecting a commitment to creating opportunities for artistic participation, professional growth and cultural exchange.
She has founded and directed artist-run initiatives, including Attic Art Space and made. Creative Space, and continues to support creative practitioners through the development of programs, workshops, events and collaborative projects. As a public artist and community arts practitioner, she works with communities, organisations and local partners to develop meaningful creative experiences that connect people with place, strengthen local creative networks and make the arts more accessible.
Through her work as an arts educator and business facilitator, Stalling supports artists and emerging creatives to develop their practices, build confidence and navigate the practical realities of working within the creative industries. Her approach brings together artistic practice, sector knowledge and community engagement, with a focus on fostering sustainable creative opportunities and vibrant regional arts communities.
