Karen Canning is a Toowoomba-based contemporary artist whose work celebrates the quiet beauty found in everyday life. Working across encaustic wax, acrylic, mixed media and wire sculptural forms, she creates richly layered pieces that invite viewers to slow down and look a little closer.
Inspired by nature, memory and the stories held within ordinary objects, Karen’s practice explores texture, light and the tactile qualities of her materials. Her encaustic works, created with natural beeswax, damar resin and pigment, are built through layers that are fused with heat, revealing luminous surfaces filled with depth and subtle detail. Alongside her paintings, she creates one-of-a-kind sculptural vessels that blur the line between fine art and functional object.
Experimentation is at the heart of Karen’s practice. Every piece evolves through an intuitive process of layering, carving, incising and refining until it finds its own voice. Whether depicting bees, flowers, birds or abstract forms, her work seeks to evoke a sense of wonder, nostalgia and connection.
Working from her studio on the Toowoomba escarpment, Karen’s original artworks are held in private collections throughout Australia and internationally. Through her art, she hopes to create pieces that become treasured companions in the homes of collectors for years to come.
