Michelle Black is an emerging printmaker living and working on Barunggam Country in Dalby, southern Queensland. Her practice is grounded in building connection to place, drawing on regional landscapes and environmental processes to inform her work.
Black works experimentally with both traditional and non-traditional printmaking techniques, frequently incorporating materials sourced directly from the land. Her practice includes cyanotypes created at the ocean’s edge; collagraphs and monoprints using earth and river sediments; vegetation-based processes including ecoprint or eco-dye; often combined with relief printing techniques.
Since relocating to Dalby in 2023, Black has received the 2023 Fairholme Open Art Prize Emerging Artist Prize (Acquisitive) and was a finalist in 2024 and 2025. She won the Works on Paper category in the Western Downs Regional Artists’ Exhibition: Rural Realities in 2024 and was a finalist again in 2025. Her work was featured in Wildflowering on the Western Downs (2025) and selected for Colour, Remembered in a Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery / UniSQ project (2026).
For more than a decade, Black has exhibited across central and southern Queensland in large and small group exhibitions and has a number of acquisitions in the Rockhampton Museum of Art collection. She has also contributed to public art projects and undertaken private commissions. Alongside her part-time studio and small-scale graphic design practice, Black has commenced a Bachelor of Visual Art at UniSQ. She is a founding member of Capricornia Printmakers and Latitude 23 Arts in central Queensland.
