Feather & Lawry Gallery is delighted to present Reverie, a new exhibition by artist Amica Aindow, opening on Friday 6th November. An exhibition evening will be held on Friday 13th November at 5.30pm, giving guests the opportunity to experience the collection and celebrate the work.
Reverie (noun): a state of being pleasantly lost in one’s own thoughts or a daydream.
Drawing on a childhood spent wandering the beaches and forests of the Isle of Wight, Aindow’s new body of work is an invitation to slow down, daydream and let the mind wander. Each painting is a loose, natural mandala, opening the way a flower opens or a shell fans out, slightly uneven and very much alive.
“Think of a seashell. It’s one of the first things we pick up as children and one of the last we stop finding beautiful. It has no use. It just grows outward from its centre, ring by ring, and ends up somewhere lovely without ever trying to. These paintings grow the same way,” said Aindow.
Aindow’s process embraces chance. She pools ink, moves it with air and allows it to find its own way before stepping back to let it settle.
“I don’t fully control how they turn out. There’s a lesson here I often resist: good things tend to arrive when we stop gripping.”
The white areas in each work are left deliberately untouched, a nod to the Japanese concept of Ma, the space between things that gives them room to breathe. Far from being empty, it is where the viewer is invited in.
“We don’t only go to galleries to learn about art. We go to feel something we’ve lost touch with. These works offer what nature always offered me: rest, and room to wander.”
“We are so often told to pay attention and keep busy, and Reverie gently suggests there is value in doing neither. Amica’s work gives our visitors permission to pause and let their thoughts drift, and we are thrilled to be sharing it with the Toowoomba community. We hope everyone who comes through our doors leaves feeling a little more rested than when they arrived,” said Tess Lawry, Director, Feather & Lawry.
