When to Increase Your Prices: A Simple Checklist

Pricing your artwork is a journey that grows alongside your career. While your initial prices are based on materials and time, your Reputation is the factor that eventually allows your work to appreciate in value.

But how do you know when you have reached that next level?

If you haven't already, make sure you read our Step-by-Step Guide to Pricing Your Art to understand the core Art Recipe. Once you have your base price, use this checklist to see if you are ready to add a 10% to 20% reputation bonus.

What is "Art Reputation"?

In the art world, reputation is a mix of professional validation, consistency, and community demand. It is the social proof that tells a collector your work is a meaningful investment.

Use the sections below to track your progress. If you can tick off three or more items across any category, you have built the necessary reputation to justify a price increase.

Professional Validation and Awards

This category is about external proof from industry experts and peers.

  1. Have you been a finalist in a local, regional, or national art prize?
  2. Have you won a category or received a "Highly Commended" at a recognised art event?
  3. Has your work been accepted into a curated commercial gallery?
  4. Have you received a grant or formal funding from a regional body?

Exhibition and Collection History

This category tracks the provenance and physical reach of your work.

  1. Have you participated in at least three group exhibitions?
  2. Have you successfully held a solo exhibition (physical or digital)?
  3. Is your work part of a public collection or a significant corporate collection?
  4. Have you been invited to participate in a specific curated project or residency?

Brand Awareness and Media

This is about how many people know your name and your Artist Voice.

  • Do you have a following on social media that regularly engages with your process and story?
  • Have you been featured in local media, a podcast, or an art publication?
  • Do you have a professional website and a verified directory listing (like a Pro profile on Pop’d Hub)?
  • Have you been asked to give an artist talk or participate in an industry panel?

Consistent Sales and Demand

The market is often the most honest indicator of reputation.

  1. Have you sold five or more original pieces to collectors who are not in your immediate circle?
  2. Do you have a waiting list for commissions or a specific series of work?
  3. Do your pieces consistently sell within a few weeks of being listed or exhibited?
  4. Do you have individuals who have purchased more than one piece of your art over time?
